ME News reports that on October 21 (UTC+8), the Bittensor development team, the OpenTensor Foundation, announced the launch of eTAO on Twitter, allowing subnet owners to customize the allocation of subnet alpha among owners, validators, and miners. Previously, all subnets followed a uniform allocation of 18% to owners, 41% to validators and their stakers, and 41% to miners. The eTAO protocol imposes the following limits: owners may allocate between 0% and 33% (with leased subnets requiring at least 18%); validators may receive up to 50%, with a variable minimum to protect the root network; miners must receive at least 33%; and owners can update allocations approximately every seven days.
For example, the owner can retain 18%, allocate 20% to validators, and increase the miner share to 62%. To safeguard the earnings of the root network’s TAO stakers, when the owner adjusts allocations, eTAO automatically adjusts the effective TAO weight of the subnet, ensuring that the root network stakers receive the same share as under the default allocation. When the validator proportion decreases from 41% to 20%, the effective TAO weight can increase from 18% to 43.9%, allowing the root network to still receive approximately 5.4% of the subnet’s emissions. eTAO does not alter the total alpha amount received by the subnet; existing subnets will maintain their current allocations until the owner actively adjusts them. Bittensor Launches eTAO to Enable Subnet Owners to Customize Emission Allocation
KuCoinFlashShare
On October 21 (UTC+8), Bittensor released a protocol update introducing eTAO, enabling subnet owners to customize emission distribution. This on-chain update marks a transition from the fixed 18%-41%-41% allocation to a flexible model with protocol-defined limits. Owners can now set subnet allocations between 0–33%, validators up to 50%, and miners at least 33%. Adjustments can be made approximately every 7 days. The system automatically recalibrates TAO weights to preserve root network returns. Existing subnets will retain their current settings until owners choose to modify them.
