CoinMarketCap reports:

IT Home, November 4 — Bloomberg reported today that Ubisoft has submitted a bid to acquire Arkane Lyon, the developer behind Dishonored and Deathloop.

Besides Ubisoft, at least two other game companies have submitted acquisition offers to Microsoft, and the future of Arkane Lyon remains undecided.

Microsoft is seeking to divest its French game studio Arkane Lyon. Ubisoft is the only bidder publicly named so far; the identities of two other gaming companies participating in the bidding remain undisclosed, and the offer details and specific terms have not been made public.

This sale initiative is part of a business restructuring led by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Xbox previously initiated large-scale layoffs and reorganized several of its game studios, with some studios being merged or downsized, while others sought to be sold or operate independently.

Bloomberg also noted that Microsoft is considering alternative options, including selling Arkane Lyon to the studio’s existing management. If this option is finalized, Arkane Lyon would become an independent game developer, operating similarly to Double Fine Productions and Compulsion Games, which were previously spun off from Xbox.

Arkane Lyon is currently developing the Marvel superhero game "Marvel's Blade" (note: the game was announced in 2023, and Microsoft has not previously canceled the project). However, with potential changes in the studio’s ownership, the future development and publishing plans for the game remain uncertain. Microsoft has also stated that it is seeking partners to support the studio in completing the game’s development and driving its commercial release.

Prior to this, the French media Le Monde reported that Microsoft was seeking new buyers for the studio, putting approximately 217 jobs at risk. Microsoft subsequently extended the original negotiation deadline, which was set to end on November 13, by one month to continue exploring options for selling the studio and finding a development partner for Marvel's Blade.

Meanwhile, Ubisoft is currently undergoing its own business restructuring, having previously closed several studios, laid off employees, and canceled multiple game projects. Therefore, even if Ubisoft ultimately succeeds in acquiring Arkane Lyon, the future staffing and project planning for the studio remain to be seen.
